Writing with Deborah

A novel writing course

Write your first book with me, 500 words a day

A course that takes you from no idea at all to a finished draft of 80,000 words. Every day you get a video from me telling you where you are in your story and what to write next, so all you have to do is sit down and write your 500 words.

£19 a month. No prep needed.

You don’t need to be ready

A lot of people put off writing a book because they feel they should plan it properly first, read the craft books, take a course or wait for the perfect idea. You don’t need any of that to start here.

If you’re nervous, or you feel like you need to prepare before you’re allowed to begin, that’s exactly what week one is for. You can arrive with no idea at all and leave it with a story you want to write and a plan for writing it.

Then we write it together, a day at a time.

I

Prep week

Seven days to go from nothing to a story you’re excited to write.

II

160 writing days

Every day you watch an intro video, write your 500 words and finish with an outro video.

III

Two weeks of editing

Once your draft is finished, I’ll show you how to edit it.

From writing day 1

“What these all have in common is a voice you can hear, a character in a situation and something unresolved, all within the first page.”
Read a full day’s scripts

You’ll always know where you are in your story

Hi, I’m Deborah

I write dark romantasy as Deborah J. Martins. I’ve written eight novels, all set in the same world, which adds up to a lot of first chapters, midpoints and endings.

Questions

Do I need an idea before I start?+

No. Prep week starts from nothing and you’ll finish it with a story to write.

What kind of book can I write?+

Any novel you like. The daily briefs follow the shape most novels share, so they work for romance, fantasy, thrillers, literary fiction or anything else you want to write.

Why 80,000 words?+

It’s a comfortable length for a first novel in a lot of genres and 500 words a day for 160 days gets you there.

What if I miss a day?+

Pick up where you left off. Your next video will be waiting for you.
